Importance of THI

Cows are susceptible to a combination of heat and humidity – measured by the Temperature Humidity Index (THI).  Humidity accumulates in cow sheds through respiration from the livestock and evaporation from water troughs and slurry, increasing the discomfort felt by cows on a hot day. The higher the humidity, the lower the ambient temperature at which a cow experiences heat stress. Galebreaker recommends placing temperature and humidity monitors within your cattle sheds and using a site, such as THI-Live.com to calculate THI. Once the THI level is known, the impact of your herd can be understood. The THI website also allows you to compare how your shed compares with other sheds across the UK and Europe, and understand how different building structures can influence THI rates. Effects of Heat Stress

Drops in milk yield is probably one of the commonly recognised effects of heat stress on dairy cows, however, heat stress has far wider implications on productivity and welfare. Galebreaker received Government-funding to investigate the impact of mechanical ventilation (VentTube Cool) on cows. The research found a stark contrast in lying behaviour between cows exposed to mechanical cooling via positive pressure tube ventilation (PPTV), and those which were not cooled (during a heat spell of September 2023). Furthermore, cows with access to the Galebreaker VentTube Cool recovered from loss in lying times within just two days whereas cows which were not cooled took almost fifteen times as long (29 days) to return to ‘normal’ lying behaviour. The study also found that cows without cooling systems lost on average 50litres per cow, whereas those under the VentTube Cool did not experience significantly reduced milk yields. Advisory service
