Agridoor and bespoke Bayscreens create ideal conditions in new grain store
The building of a new grain store, which is to be fitted with a batch drier in spring 2022, led Richard Hill from Pamington Court Farm to consider the setup of the building to optimise ventilation and weather protection.
He explains that the back of the new grain store is south facing, meaning it is frequently exposed to incoming rain.
“The new batch drier isn’t a cheap piece of machinery, so I want to do everything I can to make it last as long as possible. Having used Bayscreens in our lambing shed for 30 years, they immediately came to mind as they’ve proven to be incredibly versatile.”
Richard explains that in the lambing shed, the Bayscreens protect against wind and rain, but can be loosened off and pulled up to increase ventilation in warm weather.
He decided to fit bespoke sized Bayscreens and a 6m-by-6m Agridoor to enclose the batch drier, the end of the conveyor and the intake hoppers. This will protect them from the weather, while offering options for ventilation.
Batch driers need a good flow of fresh air, rather than recycling the same air repeatedly through the machinery. When the drier is running, the Agridoor will be opened to provide a flow of fresh air. When weather is hot and humid the Bayscreen opposite the door can be removed, to further increase air flow.
Bespoke sizing was required for the Bayscreens as they needed to fit the specific dimensions of the store. The installation was carried out by Galebreaker and took a day and a half to fit the bespoke Bayscreens and Agridoor.
“We chose the largest size possible for the Agridoor, as it will allow the batch drier to be installed without taking it apart to move it into the grain store. This will simplify the second stage of fitting the new building in the spring.”
Having used an underfloor drying system in the previous grain store, the switch to a batch drier was driven by the need to reduce vermin. It also opens the building for multiple uses, especially from January to June before any combining occurs, as the concrete floor will allow space for machinery storage.
